First Days After the Birth

The Home Visit

On the second or third day after you have your baby at Valley Birthplace, the nurse that assisted your midwife will come to your home.  This home visit is a follow-up assessment for your newborn and a chance to check in on your recovery.

The home visit includes:

  • physical assessment of both mother and baby
  • newborn metabolic and hearing screening tests
  • breastfeeding support (If any special issue arises, she will refer you to a lactation consultant at the Breastfeeding Resource Center in Abington)
  • answering questions and providing information for additional resources if needed

One-Week Appointment

One week after the birth, you will come to our office at Valley Birthplace for your one-week postpartum appointment. This appointment includes:

  • physical assessment of both mother and baby
  • breastfeeding support and referral to a lactation consultant if needed
  • the transition to motherhood

Please note: If cesarean section surgery was necessary during your birth, your first postpartum office appointment will be two weeks after the birth instead of one.

Hearing Screening Appointment

In collaboration with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, we offer a hearing screening appointment. This test assesses your child’s hearing so that you can make informed choices to support your child’s optimal experience.

Six-Week Appointment

Six weeks after the birth, you will come to our office at Valley Birthplace for your six-week postpartum appointment. This appointment includes:

  • physical assessment of both mother and baby
  • breastfeeding support and referral to a lactation consultant if needed
  • touching base about any parenting issues
  • contraceptive or family planning counseling if desired
